You pick up a new pen, and before you even think about drawing, it lands on a blank swatch. Just a quick test. Test the color. Scribble next to it. Compare. Marvel. Welcome to the wonderful world of color swatches, a small, almost meditative ritual that can do more than you might think!
Color swatches are so much more than just color samples. They help us feel colors, discover combinations, make decisions, or simply switch off. They're the first creative step before anything "really" comes into being. And sometimes, that's precisely the best part of the whole process. One look at the color swatches and we know immediately: Where do contrasts emerge? Which tones feel good next to each other? And which combinations simply put us in a good mood while drawing?
Especially for marker projects (keyword: pixels on paper), swatches are my constant companion. Whether acrylic markers or other color friends, each brand has its own unique color palette. And that's precisely why I create custom "color charts" for each set, usually in small grid squares, so I can immediately see how the colors look next to each other. Often, this even leads to entirely new color palettes that I later use for projects.
In summary:
Swatches aren't just helpful for finding colors.
They will also show you,
- whether sounds pass through the paper,
- how they behave on different papers
- or whether two colors are (perceived as) identical, even though they have completely different names.
